NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center will host a pair of upcoming workshops to provide training in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to Mississippi college students preparing to teach elementary and middle school.
Stennis personnel are presenting workshops in Cleveland, Miss., and Hattiesburg, Miss. Workshops are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 27 at Delta State University in Cleveland and on April 10 at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.
“NASA recognizes the importance of investing in pre-service teachers, as they provide the foundation to inspire and engage students in STEM disciplines,” said Cheryl Guilbeau, elementary and secondary projects coordinator for the Stennis Office of External Affairs and Education. “The pre-service workshop provides a variety of experiences for educators to integrate NASA’s mission and resources in their classroom. When teachers have the knowledge and skills to make math and science relevant and exciting, then students will be excited about becoming the next generation of explorers.”
The one-day workshops will provide NASA-developed curriculum support resources that meet national standards; ideas for integration of NASA education resources and activities into lesson planning and curriculum; hands-on, inquiry-based methods for teaching mathematics and science; and state-of-the-art methods of incorporating technology into teaching.
Participants will have an opportunity to network with NASA aerospace education specialists and university science, technology, engineering and mathematics faculty members. Stipends also are available for students participating in the workshops.
Registration has closed for the March 27 workshop, designed for students at Delta State University, Mississippi Valley State University, Mississippi Delta Community College and Coahoma Community College.
Registration for the April 10 workshop closes March 31. It is designed for students at the University of Southern Mississippi, William Carey University, Copiah-Lincoln Community College, Jones County Junior College, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and Pearl River Community College. Registration fee is $10 and may be paid at the workshop or mailed to: Celia Young, Center for Science and Mathematics Education, University of southern Mississippi, 118 College Dirve, Box 5087, Hattiesburg, MS 39406. The Pre-Service Teacher Workshop is a one-day “mini-version” of NASA’s Pre-Service Teacher Institute, a regular, two-week summer residential session for elementary and middle school education majors. The summer sessions also are designed to help pre-service teachers integrate NASA education activities, problem-based learning and technology into lesson planning and curriculum.
