SHERRER AWARDED NASA PUBLIC SERVICE MEDAL HANCOCK COUNTY, Miss. – James M. Sherrer, an employee of Lockheed Martin Information Technology (LMIT) at Stennis Space Center (SSC) near Bay St. Louis, today has been awarded NASA’s prestigious Public Service Medal.

The NASA Public Service Medal is given to an individual who is not a government employee during the period a service is performed. It recognizes exceptional contributions to NASA’s mission.

SSC Center Director Adm. Thomas Q. Donaldson V (USN, Ret.) and NASA Associate Administrator of the Space Operations Mission Directorate William F. Readdy presented the medal to Sherrer.

Sherrer, a resident of Picayune, is the LMIT program manager of the Outsourcing Desktop Initiative for NASA (ODIN) contract at SSC. He was given the award for helping NASA realize the benefits of outsourced information technology services. ODIN is a performance-based, fixed-price contract representing a new way of doing business for NASA. It provides the government a vehicle to efficiently manage IT assets while controlling costs.

Sherrer has been called “an agent of change” in introducing and deploying the ODIN IT services delivery model at SSC. Through his leadership, willingness and creativity, he has helped

ODIN provide quality service at low cost for the past five years. During that time, ODIN has evolved into a preferred source of IT services.

Sherrer has been a driving force behind ODIN’s success, helping NASA realize the value of outsourced, performance-based services contracts. He has been a leader in SSC’s pursuit of expanding E-Government – an effort to improve Internet-based technology; make it easier for citizens and businesses to interact with the government; save money; and streamline communications, to align with President Bush’s E-Government Initiative.

SSC, America’s largest rocket test complex, is NASA’s program manager for rocket propulsion testing and home to NASA’s Earth Science Applications Directorate.
