THEMIS, short for Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms, consists of five identical small satellites that study the colorful Auroras. With suites of electric, magnetic, and particle detectors, THEMIS aims to understand the physical process in near-Earth space that initiates the eruptions of the Aurora during substorms in the Earth’s magnetosphere.
