ATK of Brigham City, Utah, is performing the first inspections of metal cases that will be used for NASA’s Space Launch System solid rocket booster. The inspections are performed on a Coordinate Measuring Machining (CMM). Close to 12,000 data points are measured on each 8-foot-tall, 12-foot-diameter steel case, or 162 measurement points every 5 degrees. ATK will begin case refurbishment later this month for the hardware to be used in the first full-scale qualification test of the SLS booster which is scheduled for spring 2013.
