NASA’s Global Hawk soared aloft from Edwards Air Force Base, CA, on a functional check flight of the aircraft payload system and science instruments for the Genesis and Rapid Intensification Processes, or GRIP, mission to study hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and the Western Atlantic in August and September 2010. The grey fairing on the bottom of the aircraft housed the High Altitude Imaging Wind and Rain Profiler, or HIWRAP, radar instrument that detailed wind characteristics within hurricanes.August 15, 2010
