CALIPSO is a mission of the United States and France. Activities such as driving cars and trucks, burning coal and oil, and manufacturing chemicals release gases and small particles known as aerosols into the atmosphere. Forest fires and wind-blown desert dust also produce aerosols. CALIPSO uses Lidar to study the aerosols and thin clouds. Lidar is a short name for Light Detection and Ranging.
