NASA and the State Space Agency of Ukraine (SSAU) signed a statement of intent on civil space cooperation Friday, affirming their strong mutual interest in continued cooperation in space exploration.

“On Earth and in space, NASA and the United States are proud to partner with Ukraine for the benefit of humanity,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “When President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited NASA Headquarters in 2021, we expressed our shared interest in exploration and discovery, and the importance of international cooperation in space. We’re proud to grow our partnership and look forward to the discoveries and innovation that we will accomplish together.”

The signing ceremony was attended by Nelson and the Deputy Chairman of SSAU Volodymyr Mikheiev at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States Oksana Markarova, Deputy Minister of Economy Ihor Fomenko, and Embassy Chief of Staff Denys Sienik, also were in attendance.

The joint statement highlights the longstanding relationship between the United States and Ukraine and the shared commitment to the principles espoused in the Artemis Accords, while noting an intent to explore possible cooperation in areas such as lunar communications, science and technology research, and activities to further enhance future space exploration.

The space agencies’ leaders recognized the efforts by SSAU and its industry in support of the International Space Station, and the mutual interest in advancing exploration through cooperation.

This signing took place a week after Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal’s visit to Washington.
