Mission update May 2, 2018 — The ICON launch is now scheduled for June 14, 2018, U.S. time (June 15 local time). Accordingly, we have rescheduled this event for June 13, 2018. Participants who previously applied have been notified and should check their email. The mission launches on an Orbital ATK Pegasus XL rocket, flown on an L-1011 aircraft, from the Reagan Test Site on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

Social media users are invited to apply for credentials to attend the pre-launch media briefing at the University of California, Berkeley, for NASA’s Ionospheric Connection Explorer, or ICON, currently targeted for Thursday, December 7. ICON is scheduled to launch on an Orbital ATK Pegasus XL rocket from the Reagan Test Site on Kwajalein Atoll, part of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean at 4:15 a.m. local time (9:15 a.m. PST) on Friday, December 8.

A maximum of 25 active social media users will be selected to attend the one-day event December 7, 2017. Attendees will attend pre-launch news briefings given to traditional media, as well as attend behind-the-scenes tours of the facility with additional speakers.

NASA Social participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Speak with representatives from NASA
  • Meet fellow space enthusiasts who are active on social media
  • Meet members of NASA’s social media team
